With the decision by school districts to offer a virtual learning option or to run completely virtual this fall, the COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated how hard it is to learn or work when you don’t have the right tools - currently that’s proper electronic devices and internet access. To serve the needs of Zanesville area youth, the Muskingum Y is proud to partner with the City of Zanesville in the creation of Your Mainframe Center for Achievement located at the Muskingum County Family YMCA.
The center will provide a safe learning space, as well as reliable internet and Chromebook access to children participating in remote learning.
“As an organization dedicated to youth development, we know how important it is that our children have a safe and enriching environment for learning. With many area youths engaged in virtual learning, we are pleased to partner with the City of Zanesville to provide this environment to children,” said Jeremy Byers, Executive Director of the Muskingum County Family YMCA.
“Throughout the pandemic, we have looked for ways the Y can best serve everyone in our community. As we look to the current school year, we are pleased to support our community and provide an equitable, safe learning environment for our children to grow and thrive,” said Byers.
Your Mainframe Center for Achievement is made possible through a CARES Act Grant in partnership with the City of Zanesville. The Muskingum Y site will house 20 Dell Chromebooks, 15 privacy study carrels, 6 computer monitors, as well as full access to reliable internet access. Students from Muskingum University’s Early Childhood Education program will be present to provide tutoring during select hours. Your Mainframe Center for Achievement will be open Monday-Thursday from 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM and Friday from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
All area youth in need of WIFI access or technology are invited to utilize the new learning space free of charge. Individuals ages 17 and under require a parent/guardian to complete a one-time Mainframe Membership Agreement and Waiver. Participants may reserve Dell Chromebooks from the front desk in two-hour increments. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Muskingum Y is excited to offer this space to area youth and encourages them and their families to explore the full range of Y offerings while they are here.
“We hope youth and their families come in for learning, but stay for more,” says Byers. “We offer a variety of health and wellness programs for the entire family. We’d love to have our community give us a try and visit the Y.”
