When it comes to emergency situations, being prepared can make all the difference. That's why the Buckeye Valley Family YMCA offers a life-saving program that can give you the skills and knowledge needed to respond in a medical emergency. Each of our locations in Muskingum and Licking county offer certifications from The American Red Cross or the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) in First Aid/CPR/AED. The program is designed to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies.
So, what can you expect during a CPR class at the Y? Let's break it down.
The first thing to note is that this class is specifically designed for those who need a certification that satisfies OSHA, workplace or other regulatory requirements. This may include workplaces that require employees to be trained in CPR, or individuals looking to add a valuable skill to their resume. This program is also suitable for anyone who wants to be prepared for potential emergency situations.
The courses in this program are divided into two parts. The first part involves an online portion that can be accessed via mobile, desktop, or tablet. This blended learning format allows participants to learn at their own pace and convenience. This portion must be completed prior to attending the instructor-led skills session.
The second part of the program is the instructor-led skills session, which will be held at the Y. This is where participants will get hands-on experience and practice the skills they learned in the online portion. The goal of this training is to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond in a medical emergency.
During the skills session, participants will learn basic life-saving techniques, including CPR, the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of choking for adult patients. These are essential skills that can potentially save a life in an emergency situation.
At the end of the program, participants will be required to take a written exam and demonstrate all knowledge and skill objectives. To achieve certification, they must score 80% or better on the exam. But don't worry, the Y's trained instructors will be there to guide and support participants every step of the way.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the Adult CPR/AED certification, which is valid for two years. This certification can be used to fulfill workplace or regulatory requirements, or simply to have the peace of mind that comes with being prepared for an emergency.
Now that you know what to expect in a CPR class at the Y, here are a few tips to help you prepare for it.
- First, make sure to complete the online portion of the program before attending the skills session. This will ensure that you have a basic understanding of the concepts and can focus on practicing the skills during the skills session.
- Secondly, dress comfortably and be prepared to get on the floor and practice CPR on mannequins. This may involve kneeling or bending, so make sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring any necessary modifications or assistive devices if needed.
- Lastly, come with an open mind and be willing to learn. CPR is a skill that requires practice and repetition, so don't be afraid to ask questions and seek clarification from the instructors. They are there to support and guide you on your journey to becoming certified in CPR.
The Y is proud to offer this First Aid/CPR/AED program to the community.
