As we get closer to summer it's more important than ever for local pools and parks to fill this role. Becoming a lifeguard requires passing an intense certification test, but with the right preparation and dedication, you can achieve your goal of becoming a lifeguard.
The Buckeye Valley Family YMCA offers a lifeguard certification program for those interested in becoming certified. Our program is designed to teach the basics of lifeguarding and help you pass the certification test. In order to successfully pass the certification test and earn your certification, there are a few tips we recommend.
First and foremost, it is essential that you attend all of your classes and practice sessions. Even if you miss one, you will not be allowed to make it up. It is also important to arrive to class on time and come prepared with the necessary materials and equipment.
You will be tested on a variety of skills, including swimming 300 meters, treading water for two minutes without the use of your hands, and retrieving a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool with a maximum time of 1:40. It is important to practice these skills outside of class as much as possible. Make sure to focus on your technique and aim to improve your time with each practice session.
In addition to physical skills, you will be tested on your knowledge of lifeguarding and water safety. Be sure to read the material given to you by the instructor and review it before each class. During your classes, take thorough notes and ask questions to make sure you fully understand the material.
Lastly, make sure to take care of your body. Get plenty of rest and hydrate often. Eat a healthy diet and don’t forget to warm up before each practice session.
